The first baby bird of pink pelicans, born in the summer.
A baby bird of European white pelican was born in Moscow zoo in July 1. Now it has a dark, almost black down. Gradually, a light brown plumage will begin to grow. These birds acquire pink coloration for the third year of life.
Zoologists have not seen the chick for the first ten days. This was due to the fact that his parents warmed him with their bodies, completely closing him from prying eyes. All this time the mother and father carefully fed the newborn.
"This is our first breeding in the situation of modeling of natural conditions. Pelicans are migratory birds. In nature, they lay eggs in the spring – immediately after arrival. It is necessary that the chicks have time to grow up by the autumn and fly away with their parents. There is an opposite situation in zoos. Pelicans begin to lay eggs in autumn after resettlement in the winter (internal) enclosure. That is, the chicks appear in winter. This year we managed to stimulate the natural situation of their reproduction – and this is our first European white pelican born in the summer" – Moscow zoo CEO Svetlana Akulova said.
The task of zoologists was to help with the material for the nest. Pelicans hatch eggs themselves and gently warm the newly hatched chicks. The keepers are watching, but afar. Pelicans can be very nervous in the period of hatching. They cannot be disturbed; otherwise, parents can accidentally damage the eggs in their nest.
The Pelican is a traditional symbol of parental sacrifice. The instinct to feed directly from the goiter of the father or mother is preserved in large chicks as well. And they – can not be inferior in size to adult birds. This gave rise to the legend that the pelican sacrifices his own insides to feed the chicks. In the works of the middle ages, the pelican often appears as a symbol of martyrdom and holiness.
In Russia, European white pelicans appear in the spring, in March or April. The state of the number of some populations of this species causes concern, in connection with which it is listed in the Red book of Russia. Recently, the number of pelicans has been sharply reduced due to the reduction of habitat area as a result of irrigation and drainage activities and the use of pesticides.
The chick is now on the island opposite the Turia Gorka (New zoo territory). It is easy to notice – a small dark body in the background of almost white, with a pinkish tinge, parents. If you want to watch him eat – come by 11:00. At this time, the pelicans begin to feed.
